Economic and Social Development at Mott MacDonald offers a breadth of multi-disciplinary and sector-specific activities in an exciting and stimulating consultancy environment. The team is seeking strategic recruits to support ongoing growth in key market sectors. We are located within the multi-disciplinary Integrated Transport Division which has over 300 staff in 14 offices around the UK.
We are experiencing significant growth in our Economic and Social Development consultancy business and are looking for a senior, strategic lead to drive our economics offer. Examples of our Economic and Social Development clients and project portfolio includes: HS2, TfL, DfT, NHS England, Unilever, MerseyTravel, TfGM, Highways England, Network Rail, Environment Agency, World Bank, EBRD, EIB, Welsh Government and local authorities throughout the UK.
Economic and Social Development contains specialists in economic development, social development, public health, GIS and intelligent analytics. We apply a depth of insight to a broad range of projects including some of the largest infrastructure projects in the UK, international development projects and a mix of projects for different public and private clients throughout the British Isles where we assist in the advancement of infrastructure, physical development and policy.
The 50-strong team is based in Mott MacDonald offices in Altrincham, Birmingham, Brighton, Cambridge, Croydon, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester. A core focus for us is transport and infrastructure and we are situated within Mott MacDonald's wider Transportation business. Year-on-year growth is driving our expansion and these key roles have been identified to support further growth and expansion. We're looking for people that can thrive in a multi-disciplinary, commercial environment and have an appetite for supporting commercial growth.
You will become part of the management team in Economic and Social Development and split your time between team management, business development and project direction. This role is a work winning role and we are seeking candidates with a track record in delivering profitable growth demonstrated in a commercial environment. The role will be based in the South but is UK-wide and there is a need to travel to our offices and client locations in order to undertake this role. We are considering locations such as London, Croydon or Cambridge but there will be a need to spend 2 days a week in our Central London office.
Does this sound like you?
You will have a background in economics, economic development, infrastructure economics, transport economics and business cases with professional consultancy experience of the application of economic techniques to help clients articulate the strategic narrative of change and quantify benefits using industry standard and innovative, robust, methods. You've previously worked within consultancy environments as well as multi-disciplinary environments where you have undertaken management duties such as operating as a Project Director level. You are comfortable managing projects and are able to do so profitably contributing to strategic business planning and business development. Your technical skills include economic analysis, economic impact-assessments, socio-economic assessments, economic research, employment land, urban economic and social development as well as technical skills in bid writing and writing reports. In addition to this you have both knowledge and experience against a successful portfolio of five-case-business-cases which you have either worked on or managed the production of.
You will also be able to demonstrate the following:
- Degree qualification in a quantitative and analytical field such as Economics, Geography, Urban Planning, Transport, Business or Sociology
- Membership with a relevant professional body
- Knowledge and experience of established and traditional approaches to economic appraisal in relation to wider economic benefits and how they can support successful business cases
Although not essential any experience of working across different transport modes - road, rail, freight, aviation, mass rapid transit, public transport, interchanges, transit-oriented development - would be advantageous. Additionally, it would be beneficial I you've worked on development and regeneration projects where transport is an enabler of development would be an advantage
