Role Purpose

  • To work as part of the Compliance Advisory team responsible for enabling designated business areas (as agreed with the Local Compliance Officer (“LCO”) to comply with all relevant local regulations, laws, codes, in accordance with Group Compliance policy.

Key Accountabilities

Impact on the Business

  • Assisting line management in its prime responsibility for complying with all relevant regulations, including the provision of the necessary advice and guidance so that it can ensure that appropriate operating procedures and controls are in place and are adequately defined to enable business areas to conduct their business within the applicable laws, codes, rules and regulations, in accordance with Group Compliance Policy.
  • Under instruction from the LCO or the Area Compliance Officer, assist line management in resolving or, as the case may be helping to resolve any Compliance problems
  • Ability to proactively learn about all business areas even if not directly involved.

  • Ensuring an adequate understanding of all relevant Regulations and Internal procedures applicable to the business

Customers / Stakeholders

  • Building good relationships with the following: internally with other support functions and compliance teams; external parties (Trustees, Investment Advisers and Third Party Administrators) and internal/external auditors in relation to compliance/control matters, including the provision of technical support and guidance
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with designated client departments to facilitate a thorough understanding of their compliance needs
  • Maintain close links with fellow Compliance Officers inside and outside of the HSBC Group to keep up to date with regulatory expectations and best market practices

  • Provide technical support to the businesses
  • Provide training directly to business areas in the procedures and practices necessary to achieve compliance.
  • Generating solutions to compliance needs with designated client departments
  • Assist with all aspects of the documentation review process
  • Attend business team meetings on a regular basis

Leadership & Teamwork

  • Developing and maintaining effective team working and communication with other Compliance Managers and Compliance Assistants.
  • Develop ability to take direction from a number of managers within the compliance department and assist in prioritisation of workloads to ensure all deadlines/targets are met.
  • Oversee specific tasks undertaken by Compliance Assistants as designated in conjunction with the departmental management
  • Support other team members when needed in covering work even if outside direct area of responsibility.

Typical KPIs and Targets

  • Assist the Senior Compliance Manager in the maintenance of the Desk Procedures Manual.
  • Performing ad hoc projects, as requested by the LCO or the Senior Compliance Manager.
  • Assist with the supervising and mentoring the work of junior staff, ensuring that this is completed in a timely and effective basis
  • Feedback from the team and business.

Operational Effectiveness & Control

  • Monitoring changes to business practices and products to ensure that procedures and/or controls are adequate to cover the business and that any consequential change to the Compliance chart is made
  • Monitoring and checking for adherence to established procedures and systems, reporting findings and making recommendations

  • Ensuring the Cross Business Monitoring Team are aware of any such changes

Major Challenges

  • Dealing with all levels of seniority in HSBC Global Asset Management.
  • Fostering and maintaining an attitude of a ‘solutions led’ Compliance team working with a positive attitude.
  • Keeping abreast of all regulatory development and anticipate changes in order to ensure full compliance at all times.
  • Reporting to the LCO and Senior Compliance Manager all material and significant breaches or potential breaches of which the Compliance Officer is aware of applicable laws, codes, rules and regulations; any significant changes to such laws, codes, rules and regulations; and any significant cases of irreconcilable disputes with line management;

Observation of Internal Controls

  • Maintains HSBC internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators.
  • Understands, follows and demonstrates compliance with all relevant internal and external rules, regulations and procedures that apply to the conduct of the business in which the jobholder is involved, specifically Internal Controls and any Compliance policy including, inter alia, the Group Compliance policy.
  • Understand the FCA Treating Customers Fairly (TCF) principles, HSBC Global Asset Management’s Conduct Risk philosophy and how this affects your role. Act in a manner that takes account of these principles to ensure fair outcomes for customers
