Head of Supplier Development

The Maritime & Land Sector is one of the reporting segments for BAE Systems plc. It consists of four standalone businesses - Submarines, Naval Ships, Maritime Services and Munitions – as well as the newly formed RBSL JV, with a combined turnover of in excess of £3bn. As the Sector moves forward enhancing the value contribution of our supply chain will be a key factor in its success.
The team have an opportunity for a Head of Supplier Development to join them. In this role, you will be responsible for the creation and implementation of a proactive supplier development activity which ensures we enable and support our suppliers to perform and deliver greater value to the business and enterprise. The role holder will work closely with the Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing and Procurement teams across Maritime & Land UK, to ensure a coordinated and integrated approach to supplier development, maximising the contribution of each function and our suppliers. The overall aim of this role is to an establish a multi-functional approach, mitigating key business risks and generating additional value founded on external best practice, which enables supply chain operational excellence.
Your main responsibilities as Head of Supplier Development will involve:
The role is responsible for developing and leading the improvements to the functional supplier performance activities in order to deliver effective support to programmes, including:
Developing and implement a Supplier Performance and Development framework across Maritime & Land UK
Implementing standardisation of metrics for supplier performance reporting, developing supplier performance analytics to provide senior management teams with visibility against key performance targets, trends and early warning flags
Understanding front end Customer requirements to assess suitability of the supply chain to deliver and identify areas where supplier development can mitigate risk or drive improvement.
Driving demonstrable improvements in supplier performance through interventions and different working practises
Designing capabilities, job families and competencies for supplier development aligned to the future needs of the sector
Collaborating across Engineering, Manufacturing and Quality and with global procurement teams will be essential
Acting as mentor/coach to others within the sector to facilitate a best practice learning environment
Your skills and qualifications:
Experience working at a management level defining supplier development practices and delivering strategies for improvement of capability
Excellent knowledge and proven experience of large-scale manufacturing
Experience of supplier development in a complex environment
Experience of people capability development and change management
Knowledge of a wide range of procurement approaches and strategies
Ability to manage and influence stakeholders at all levels to achieve successful outcomes
Lean/Six Sigma qualification is desirable

Location: flexible - can be based at any of our sites across Glasgow, Barrow, Portsmouth or from home with UK travel required occasionally
