The UK Work Experience programme is aimed at students looking to get a realistic taste of what life is truly like at a leading global Bank. Consisting of a blend of experiences, both virtual and physical, students can expect to develop hands-on, practical experience in a specific business area, build their knowledge of banking and financial services, and explore the potential future careers available at HSBC.

Over the course of a week-long placement hosted across June/July or August in 2021*, students can expect to get to know HSBC – our values, our history and exactly what we do – and gain an insight into actual jobs that you could be doing if you came to work for us full time. There will be an opportunity to work on a live project and share your ideas with your manager.

How to apply

Applications are now open and will close on 21 February 2021. After the closing date, we will not accept any further applications. Due to limited vacancies we would encourage to submit an application as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

The recruitment process will include completing an online application with eligibility questions, a short online assessment and final stage telephone interview. We will then advise all applicants in March 2021 on the outcome.

We recruit on a rolling basis, meaning that the telephone interviews will start when the first applications are submitted.

We are currently accepting applications for placements in multiple business areas, all of which are listed below. If you are successful in meeting the minimum requirements in our recruitment process, we will be in contact to find out your preferred business area. Should you be successful in getting an offer, we will try our best to accommodate your preference however, due to limited vacancies, this may not always be possible.

Procurement – As an organisation we work with a variety of suppliers and service providers who help us operate in the way which we do. This is where Procurement comes in. This function looks after the identifying, buying, negotiating and control of partners, ensuring we get the best quality and price for our agreements. This could cover everything from agreements on real estate to software licenses, desks and chairs and computers.

This opportunity is best suited for individuals with an interest in business, data and cost saving.

Digital – The world of Digital is incredibly broad. For the purposes of this Work Experience placement, Digital refers to the technological part of our organisation; looking at elements such as the creation of new products, improvement of existing projects, business automation, Enterprise Services right through to cyber-security.

This opportunity is best suited for individuals with an interest in data and technology.

Commercial Banking (CMB) – The world of business is incredibly broad and complicated. From managing finances such as overdrafts or loans through to navigating international growth, Commercial Banking is a vital part of the bank. In short, we use our global expertise and network to help businesses grow. The clients we serve range from small, local independent businesses right through to some of the world’s largest multinationals.

This opportunity is best suited for individuals with an interest in working with or advising businesses.

Wealth and Personal Banking (WPB) – This is also known as everyday banking, and is what most people think of when you ask them to imagine a bank. What most people do not realise is that WPB is one of the world’s most important, innovative and fast changing industries. This function helps millions of individuals worldwide to protect and grow their finances; not just helping people access and leverage finance but also developing new financial products to best serve our customers.

This opportunity is best suited for individuals with an interest in people and finance.

New for 2021, this programme will also include an all virtual employability and soft skill development programme, geared to give students the noncognitive capital required to invest in their own future.
