What would I be doing?

As an Engineering Team Leader, you will manage a team of individual contributors of mostly Engineers, and will be responsible for the products and/or services they provide. You will take care of the performance and wellbeing of the team members, keeping them aligned and giving them sufficient autonomy to do their work. You will make sure that the products and/or services are delivered with the expected level of quality, fulfilling the expectations created in the amount of time agreed, in partnership with the Product Manager. You will typically report to an Engineering Manager (EM).

What does the team do

You will be part of the Bot Services team in the Engineering Control Systems area. Our mission is to support Engineers working on bots in our automated warehouses.
The software we develop is responsible for safe removal and induction of bots onto the hive - guiding users through the process, testing that the bots are fully working before they can move onto the grid, and orchestrating the handover between other control systems.
Another part of our system holds bot configurations, and manages distribution of firmware updates across swarms of bots. We are also responsible for applications that are used for controlling bots manually when needed, either sending individual commands or scripting potentially complex movement patterns that can be used for testing new versions of bots and commissioning grids in new warehouses.

What we are looking for

  • 2.1 BSc or above degree in Computer Science or related subject (or an equivalent grade from outside the UK)
  • Experience in managing teams
  • Highly organised and able to plan, manage, track and deliver effectively
  • Excellent understanding of Lean and Agile principles and practices
  • Passionate about developing high-quality enterprise software
  • Excellent spoken and written English
  • Experience in Java 8+ or other OO languages
  • Happy to take an active role in supporting the business needs

This would make you stand out from the crowd:

  • Experience in software design
  • Experience in using AWS
  • Experience working in a continuous delivery environment
  • Experience working with micro-services
  • Experience in using databases and SQL, and the connectivity from Java (e.g. Hibernate)
  • Experience in frontend development
