Project Engineering Manager

Would you like to play an integral part in delivering engineering support to Warships of all classes? We currently have a vacancy for a Project Engineering Manager at our site in Portsmouth.

As a Project Engineering Manager, you will be an engineering authority for a project, ensuring that the engineering services delivered to Warships in Portsmouth Naval Base and globally is safe and delivers a functional engineering product.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment, leading the development and delivery of the engineering programme of work for all warships in Portsmouth. You will be working with all levels of stakeholders delivering engineering decisions at the waterfront, ensuring ships get back to sea on time and with the correct level of integrity.

You will have the opportunity to travel within this role across the UK and globally, providing global support to warships; this is likely to involve being deployed globally for up to 3 months each year.

Your main responsibilities as a Project Engineering Manager will involve:

Maintaining engineering oversight, providing engineering governance, assurance, and integrity, ensuring overall quality of production work in addition to formal quality related events.

Being the technical point of reference for the Project, able to carry out technical investigations which may include engineering calculations in support of engineering issues that arise during the vessel’s project

Ensuring that key engineering related risks are fully recognised and managed for projects (including emergent work, class defects, Capability Insertions (Upgrades) integration and safety risks)

Liaising closely with project staff regularly during the course of the project and to ensure that emerging engineering issues and queries are identified and addressed through appropriate engineering channels

Providing oversight in the development of necessary SEMP (Safety and Environmental Management Plan) and project hazard logs in support of the Maritime Product Safety Framework

Leading the engineering aspects of Life Cycle Management ensuring the project delivers against mandated BAES LCM policy

Your skills and qualifications:

Essential:

Chartered member of appropriate Engineering Institute or equivalent experience and working towards (including relevant theoretical knowledge and experience)

Must be willing to travel

Must have relevant / recent ‘hands on’ engineering experience and be capable of making independent risk based engineering decisions.

Knowledge of design support activities with ability to conduct engineering calculations in support of tasking requirements.

Experience in an Engineering position supporting complex engineering projects

A broad knowledge of Mechanical, Electrical, Constructive, and Electronic Systems within a marine environment which may include:

Propulsion and steering systems

Hydraulics

Water production and treatment

Refrigeration and air conditioning

Electrical generation and distribution

Navigation and communication electronics

Deck equipment including cranes and winching gear

Aviation support systems

Door, hatches and windows

Combat and mission systems

Desirable:

First-hand experience in a senior marine engineering role ashore and/or at sea.

Experience of the development of ships, and the procurement of marine systems, equipment and materials

Extensive experience of repair, maintenance and integration of ships, their systems and equipment

SSEMT (Ship Safety and Environmental Management Training – MoD delivered safety management course) qualified

Master’s degree is an advantage
