Security and privacy are arguably the most significant concerns for enterprises and consumers using public cloud platforms. The Confidential Computing group at Microsoft Research Cambridge has been conducting pioneering research in the design of trustworthy systems that guarantee strong security and privacy properties to cloud users.

As part of our research, we are co-designing new hardware, operating system, and programming language security features. We aim to grow a team with strong research and engineering skills spanning security, computer architecture, systems, and programming language design and implementation. We would like to meet researchers in any of these areas who would like to collaborate with experts in the other fields.

We place strong emphasis on designing systems that can be deployed at scale in the real world. We work very closely with products groups in Microsoft and have contributed to deployed services such as Azure Confidential Computing.

Responsibilities

The researcher would be responsible for designing and prototyping novel hardware, operating system, and language security features in the context of full-stack security research supported by a team of experts with diverse backgrounds. The researcher is expected to be able to work with product groups to frame a research agenda and organise their own time. The researcher will need to be able to work effectively within a highly multidisciplinary team.

Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent experience in Computer Science in a field related to computer architecture, systems, security, or programming language design.
  • Enthusiastic team worker.

One or more of the following additional skills are not a requirement but a good candidate would be expected to show willingness to develop them to some degree over the next few years:

  • Experience working in multidisciplinary research teams.
  • Experience with hardware description languages.
  • Experience with compiler design and implementation.
  • Experience operating system design and implementation.
  • Experience with programming language design.
