LEGAL COUNSEL

Would you like to work within an interesting and challenging role, supporting our Maritime Services business? We currently have a vacancy for a Legal Counsel at our site in Portsmouth.

In this role you will grow to understand the needs of our business and provide legal solutions that enhance and protect the Company and support its objectives. You will provide generalist and, over time, specialist legal advice, managing a broad range of legal risk and opportunity.

This role will provide you with ample opportunity for career advancement both with Maritime Services and potentially other parts of the broader BAE Systems business. You will be able to work closely with key stakeholders, and be involved with transactions through their whole lifecycle. You will be joining a business that is both interesting and diverse and which plays a key role in the UK’s defence sector.

Your main responsibilities as a Legal Counsel will involve:

Providing in depth, professional, timely and pro-active legal support on a cross-business / business specific basis to internal customers (cross functionally).

Working to ensure, in conjunction with colleagues in the relevant business/specialist legal team, that the Maritime Services business is consistently compliant with applicable legal and business policy requirements.

Making an effective contribution to business performance in an advisory capacity by providing advice in simple language that is easy for the business client to understand.

Identifying, analysing and prioritising core legal issues, explaining these effectively and understanding their relative significance.

Delivering excellent legal solutions in an effective, timely, and proactive manner to meet the demands of the Maritime Services business.

Providing training on matters of law and policy to various functional and business areas.

Efficient use of external counsel as and when required.

Contributing to the wider BAE Systems legal function as a member of the global legal community and leveraging/sharing knowledge and capability accordingly including engaging in effective collaboration across the function and business.

Your skills and qualifications:
Essential

Qualified solicitor or barrister with relevant commercial or corporate law experience at a leading law firm/appropriate in house department.

Can provide expert, pragmatic, commercial Legal advice.

Knowledgeably, thoroughly but succinctly drafts standard legal documents in plain English.

Applies subject matter knowledge to commercial and business problems and issues.

Understand and deliver solutions to support the strategy of the business and its priorities.

Desirable
Commercial understanding of government contracting processes.
What we're looking for in you:

As a Legal Counsel, you will have a strong customer focus and the ability to build relationships internally and externally. You will demonstrate a high level of attention to detail and take responsibility for own work. You will have a proactive approach to solving problems, managing your own areas of responsibility on a project whilst also showing the ability to work within a team.

You will have strong negotiation and influencing skills through the use of sound and rational argument to persuade and influence. You will have excellent people, collaborative and resource management skills.
