Public Affairs Manager - Parliamentary Relations


We currently have a fantastic opportunity for a Public Affairs Manager - Parliamentary Relations to be based at our BAE Systems site in Stirling Square, London.

As a Public Affairs Manager of Parliamentary Relations, you will be responsible for managing the company’s relationships with parliamentarians, and for promoting the company’s interests to them. You will also be responsible for advising the business on all aspects of its parliamentary activity.

This role will provide you with direct exposure to building relationships with the Public Affairs agency based in Portland, and you will report directly into the Head of Government Relations.

Your main responsibilities as a Public Affairs Manager of Parliamentary Relations will involve:


Identifying MPs and Peers who have an interest in the company’s work, either from a constituency perspective, because they are members of relevant committees, or because defence, engineering, manufacturing and skills development are areas of interest for them.


Establishing and maintaining relationships with that group, and their staffs, and ensuring that they are up to date with company issues, and have a point of contact should they need information.


Making plans for communicating key issues, and especially major announcements, to this group. Advising on messaging and on the company’s approach to the communication of major news, working closely with the Group Communications team.


Developing strategies for engaging MPs and Peers on issues of importance to the company.


Preparing senior staff for any meetings with parliamentarians, or evidence sessions before parliamentary committees.


Keeping up to date, and advising the business on political issues which might affect the company’s interests. Monitoring parliamentary activity and ensuring that it is reported across the business, where it is relevant.


Maintaining relationships with think tanks, and other political organisations which influence policies, and thinking, on issues of interest to the company.


Representing the company in relevant trade association activity.


Managing the relationship with the company’s public affairs adviser.

Your skills and qualifications:

Essential:

The successful candidate should have a track record in managing relationships with MPs and peers.

They should have strong written and verbal communications skills.

They should have an interest in, and enthusiasm for, politics and current affairs, allied to a good knowledge of the UK political scene.

First rate networking ability.

Desirable:

Experience and knowledge of working in the defence industry

Driving through outcomes and delivering on them – tenacious character.

Experience of driving campaign strategies forward.

You will be able to initiate change patiently and have the ability to drive forward responsibilities.
