The Production Control Systems teams are responsible for building automation software that powers our next-generation robotic picking and storage solution. This solution is a core component of our Customer Fulfilment Centres (CFCs) which are offered as part of the Ocado Smart Platform (OSP). OSP is being marketed to retailers globally as a world-class platform for grocery eCommerce.

As an Automation/ Embedded Systems Product Manager you will be partnering with Engineering teams within Technology, providing clarity of business requirements across relevant product stream areas and acting as a bridge between the technical and business worlds. Based on this, we are looking for someone with domain experience with automation or embedded systems. This role will directly partner with one or more Engineering Team Leads, to be a key go-to person within a specific product area, sharing responsibility for product realisation to deliver great products and solutions for our clients and stakeholders. You will be required to build up and maintain a healthy level of trust and collaboration with your engineering counterparts, respecting the boundaries of your individual roles and responsibilities.

You will have responsibility for

Leading & Influencing

  • Partner with Engineering Team Leads to create a strong sense of purpose and mission for the development team(s)
  • Act as the go-to person for your product area
  • Evangelise customer needs in a compelling way to department and engineering teams
  • Make effective decisions with a clear rationale, using appropriate tools for the scenario
  • Champion the product vision & ensure the plan is in line with vision and goals and continues to be fit for purpose throughout roadmap delivery

Product Knowledge

  • Ensure that the product roadmap is aligned with the platform goals and is validated with stakeholders
  • Engage stakeholders effectively to gather user feedback to continuously refine the product roadmap
  • Understand and measure the key business drivers for your product domain and assess how new capabilities impact upon them
  • Develop a deep understanding of the business processes within our CFCs and understand where your products fit in
  • Build relationships with stakeholders and collaborate to define scope and prioritise stories to maximise business value
  • Develop a deep understanding of the systems that your product comprises to enable you to act as a proxy for the team

Planning, Delivery & Validation

  • Ensure that the product roadmap is aligned with the platform goals and is validated with stakeholders
  • Engage stakeholders effectively to gather user feedback to continuously refine the product roadmap
  • Share accountability with the Engineering Team Lead to drive the team towards realising defined goals
  • Apply fit-for-purpose agile processes, escalating and removing obstacles in workflow wherever required
  • Manage the product backlog, including defining user stories and acceptance criteria
  • Define scope & prioritise stories to maximise business value

We would like to hear from you if you have the following:

  • Experience of working as a Product Manager in an agile environment
  • Domain experience with automation or embedded systems
  • Ability to plan, manage, track and deliver on commitments
  • Defining product roadmaps, building collaboratively with design and engineering peers, and shipping at scale
  • Experience of collaborating with multiple functional areas, including product management, engineering, UX/UI
  • Ability to estimate the value of software features, performing cost-benefit analysis and constructing business cases
  • Strong technical skills and an analytical mind set
  • An understanding and appreciation for software development and design
