Internship Opportunities: Computer Graphics and Computational Optics

Last updated one month ago
Location:Cambridgeshire
Job Type:Full Time

Mixed reality is the upcoming computing platform. New applications will be facilitated, from online shopping to remote telemedicine. Even though the first VR headsets appeared in the market more than a decade ago, their adoption by the users has been slow. The greatest challenge in MR is developing a comfortable device that can provide unique experiences for extended periods.

Microsoft has a large presence in the Mixed Reality space. Both in software and hardware. As Microsoft Research, our mission is to scout for new technologies and work together with the product groups to deliver innovative solutions and experiences to our customers.

The Interactive Media Group, part of Microsoft Research, is currently investigating innovative technologies that could be used in both Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). We are looking for ambitious, open-minded, and hard-working PhD-students to join our team and bring new ideas into the project. There are two areas of interest: optical architectures and visual perception. Candidates with experience in optics and scientific programming would be best suited to work in these areas. Candidates with physics, engineering, mathematics, or computer science background are all encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build optical systems.
  • Simulate optical systems in Zemax and MatLab
  • Write, review, and share code as a part of a team.
  • Solving programming related problems and optimizing code.
  • Improve the mathematical modelling of the system.
  • Attend regular meetings over Teams.

Qualifications

Essential skills are:

  • Good programming skills
  • Strong background in mathematics and signal processing
  • Ability to make decisions and work independently.
  • Experience with MatLab or a similar programming language

Desirable but not essentialskills:

  • Understanding of optics
  • Understanding of human visual perception
  • Experience with Julia and Visual Studio
  • Experience with Mixed Reality programming

The successful candidate will join our team at Cambridge, UK. This post will be an excellent opportunity to acquire new skills and knowledge in a scientifically diverse and stimulating environment. The project involves both software and hardware development and if the conditions allow it, some time will be spent in our lab space at Cambridge. Note that the successful candidate must live in the UK during their internship, even if working remotely. The internship duration is 12-16 weeks and is expected to be completed by June 2021. Microsoft provides competitive enumeration and will cover part of the travel expenses.
