Machine learning is having a transformative effect onmanyresearchareas, significantlyaltering theway many problems are approached, and the scope of what is achievable.Project Silicais developing arevolutionary storage technologyby using femtosecond lasers to store data in glass.Theproject providesan unprecedented opportunity to completely re-think how storage systems are built, and buildastorage technology that’s end-to-end optimizedsolely for the cloud, from the materials level up to the user interface.Machine learning plays a critical role in thedesign and development of thetechnology,including:enablingunprecedented information density to be encoded and successfully read back,end-to-end optimizationacross hardware and software,and reinforcement learning controlofdifferentparts of the system.
TheProject Silica team is highly multi-disciplinary,comprisingcomputer scientists, physicists, optical scientists, chemists, electrical and mechanical engineers, and designers.Tackling the hard technical challenges ofmaking glass storageinto a real technologypresents amyriad ofunique opportunitiesfor cross-disciplinary research,includingapplyingmachine learningto completelynew problem domains.
Contractduration: 2 years.
As a researcher on the project, you will be empowered tocollaboratewithvarious members oftheteam,designing, implementing, and applyingmachine learningsolutionstovariousaspects of the system, with the goal of makingSilicainto a successful storage technology deployed at scale in the cloud. Problem areasbroadlyinclude:computer vision for object detection and recognition,ML-driven discovery andoptimizationof new physical processes,hardware/software co-optimization,RL control, etc.
- Completed (or on-track to complete)a PhDina relevant discipline.
- Knowledge ofdeeplearning.
- Interest inappliedresearch withreal high-world impact.
- Strong software engineering skills for rapid and accurate development.
- Creative andcollaborative approach to problem solving.
- Publications in toptier conferences.
- Working knowledge of storage systems or storage development.
- Hands-on experience with currentdeep learningframeworks (e.g.,PyTorch,Tensorflow, etc.)
