Brief Description

This is an exciting time to join Network Rail in a time of transition with the Putting Passengers First programme. This plan is to provide the best possible service for passengers and freight users, to deliver the promises we've made for Control Period Six (CP6), and to improve the way we work together and with the industry.

You will be part of the NW&C Region which consist of three routes:

  • North West Route, covering Manchester, Liverpool, Lancashire and Cumbria.
  • Central Route, covering the West Midlands and Chiltern areas.
  • West Coast Mainline South Route*, covering the West Coast main line south of Crewe to London Euston.

This assistant engineer will sit within the regional signalling renewals team.

The role will be involved in supporting the creation the NW&C Regional Signalling Renewals Strategy and Renewals Workbank for CP7 and beyond. This workbank will identify the future programme for signalling renewals for each of the 3 Routes. Collaboration with the Routes, other fields and partners will be part of the role; as part of the process to construct a coordinated renewals workbank for the NW&C Region that addresses the renewal need and that focuses on the objective of Putting Passengers First.

About the role (External)

Your days will be dynamic and will include:

  • Assisting with the inspection and assessment of the performance of signalling engineering assets
  • Supervising and evaluating asset condition and capability trend data.
  • Supervising failure precursors to advise examination, maintenance, strengthening, risk mitigation and renewal plans.
  • Undertaking engineering analysis and risk assessments of assets or asset components to support the asset management process and scheme development, including business cases and whole life cost analysis.
  • Evaluating the output from inspections, examinations and assessments of asset condition to validate renewal/repair proposals.
  • Maintaining signalling asset data and information within the company systems and processes.
  • Provide engineering support and participate in investigations of incidents relating to Track.
  • Dedicatedly seek and acquire knowledge, skills and experience of railway engineering through a combination of working with senior colleagues, on-the-job training, formal training courses, personal research, and attendance at meetings of professional and technical bodies
  • Preparing regular reports of progress on training and professional development for review by mentors, supervising engineers and other relevant persons
  • Pursuing the achievement of core and specific objectives for your training scheme
  • Maintaining a personal development plan and comprehensive records of initial and continuing professional development

Essential

  • HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in engineering
  • Initial experience in NR Asset Management
