“Ocado Technology, powering the future of retail through sustained disruptive technology innovation...”

Ocado Technology is putting the world’s retailers online using the cloud, robotics, AI, and IoT. We develop the innovative software and systems that power Ocado.com, the world’s largest online-only grocery retailer as well as the global ‘Ocado Smart Platform’. With everything from websites to fully autonomous warehouse that we design in-house, our employees need to be specialists in a wide range of technologies to help drive our business.

We champion a value-led culture to get our teams working at their very best and to help create a collaborative working environment that our people love. Core values of Trust, Autonomy, Craftsmanship, Collaboration and Learn Fast help drive our innovative culture. But don’t just take our word for it, have a look at what our people are saying about us on Glassdoor.

Who we are...

We are the team building applications which power the picking and storage systems within our next generation customer fulfilment centres (CFCs). These CFCs are core to the Ocado Smart Platform (OSP) being marketed to retailers globally. We are looking for senior software engineers to help continue the development of our automated solutions into world class products.

Our systems are responsible for the control and maintenance of 1000s of robots over our proprietary 4G-based mobile network and the control of peripheral conveyor systems. We are also responsible for a suite of web apps, which aid the operational teams in the smooth running of our warehouses. All these applications are critical to our warehouses reaching their maximum capacity and efficiency, in turn enabling Ocado Technology to continue its growth into a fully fledged, product-based technology company.

What we’d like you to do...

As a senior software engineer within the Control Systems teams, you will be expected to drive technical excellence within our teams and set an exemplary example for more junior members to aspire to. You will be a practitioner of clean code, TDD, and agile methodologies. You will understand the value of continuous integration, continuous delivery and strive for a high level of automation.

You will be responsible for delivering large projects individually, with others in your team, and across the OSP CFC department. You will also be involved in prioritisation discussions with the Product Manager, providing insight, direction and updates about upcoming and in-progress work.

At a departmental level, we expect you to participate in technical discussions and influence the direction of department wide projects. Involvement in working groups and/or special interest groups will also be encouraged, with the aim of bringing knowledge back into your local teams.

Production support is another area you will be expected to participate in. As we strive to be product focussed teams, you will have the autonomy to drive reliability work which results from support issues.

We'd like to hear from you if you have...

  • Extensive OO programming experience.
  • Solid knowledge of Java, preferably Java 11.
  • A firm grasp of computer science fundamentals and the ability to pick up new ideas and knowledge, putting it into practice quickly.
  • Understanding of software architecture and design patterns.
  • Willingness to work across the entire software stack, from provisioning of infrastructure through to software design, development, and support
  • Experience in the full Software Development life-cycle, having delivered projects from conception to deployment in production.
  • Experience in providing production support and a passion in developing code which does not require support.
  • Experience in development tooling and workflows, including automated test/deploy pipelines using tools such as GitLab, docker/Kubernetes deployments, code analysis tools.

Bonus points for...

  • Knowledge of programming paradigms beside OO.
  • Some familiarity with web-based technologies e.g. HTML, CSS, JavaScript.
  • Experience and interest in real-time control systems or low-latency systems.
  • Experience and interest in algorithms and optimisation.

What we can offer you...

Our employee benefits are designed for you, we care about people and we’ve ensured we have a wealth of benefits that focus on your well-being. Within our flexible environment we can offer technically stretching work, a competitive salary and share schemes.
