Senior Design Engineer

Would you like to work with our design team working across the entire Royal Navy fleet? We currently have a vacancy for a Senior Design Engineer at our site in Portsmouth.

As a Senior Design Engineer, you will be undertaking a defined range of detail design activities in line with all the relevant processes and quality requirements. You will be supplying advice and support to operations and other functions and organise and co-ordinate aspects of detail design activity ensuring defined objectives are achieved whilst continually maintaining quality and service requirements.

This role will provide you with an opportunity to work across design services with our key stakeholders and customers. You will have the opportunity to experience a diversity of work as no two days are the same with travel involved to work in our UK locations and across the world.

Your main responsibilities as a Senior Design Engineer are as follows:

Support the developing, maintaining and modifying engineering processes and procedures in assigned areas in response to technical developments and operational need.

Produce and develop complex designs in line with specifications and all quality and technical standards, and carry out detail design appraisals in assigned areas to ensure all standards are maintained, taking due cognisance of Design for Production.

Carry out investigations into operational problems or developments and develop and prepare solutions, individually or as a member of a design team.

Support the development of best practice to increase the capability, performance of tools and processes

Identify training requirements, skills gaps and development requirements of own discipline

Undertake task verification/checking of other Design Engineer’s work as directed by Principal Engineering Manager.

Lead and conduct ship trials, surveys and engineering support activities.

Additional Key Accountabilities:

Keep up to date in relevant technical areas, develop skills and capabilities to be able to provide more effective services (seeking and sharing good practice and knowledge to continuously improve practices), and supply technical support and expertise to others as required.

Provide help and direction to less experienced team members to support both their effective working and their development.

Manage assigned budgets and lead, develop and motivate assigned employees to ensure they are aware of and capable of delivering their accountabilities.

Make engineering decisions within own sphere of responsibility and delegated authority

Compile accurate estimates

Compile statements of Works (SOW,s) on behalf of customer when required.

Your skills and qualifications:

Essentials:

Proficient in Auto-Cad or Inventor or equivalent

Required to be the lead designer on a project and coordinate the input of a team of designers.

Mentors Design engineers within their discipline and cross discipline teams, providing advice and guidance on requirements, policies, standards and processes

Job requires ability to make high level judgments to meet exacting specifications and requirements.

Be able to provide information that will be analysed and used by others to deliver the solution.

Carry out calculations to determine engineering outputs relevant to own discipline.

Carry out and lead in depth feasibilities studies.

Have the capability of engineering support fault finding to diagnose and rectify electrical defects as required during trials or when the customer demands.

Requires an understanding of how activities of own team interrelates and interacts with other functional areas aligned to the same contract or project.

Understands in detail the technical specification aligned to the functional area of activity.Can manage requirements and identify scope change.

A full understanding of the external environment including the MoD structure and their engineering processes.

Can apply the relevant Business processes to developing their outputs
