Counsel - IT and Privacy
We currently have a vacancy for an experienced lawyer to work in the IT and Data Law team within BAE Systems Head Office at our site in Farnborough.
The role requires you to be able to deliver clear and concise guidance relating to use of new technology and IT services by the Company. You will also be supporting lines of business and functions in implementing and managing all aspects of the Company’s data protection compliance strategy, and ensuring the Company responds appropriately to new and existing IT, information and cyber security related regulatory and contractual obligations.
Your main responsibilities in the role will involve:
Ensuring an effective and compliant response across BAE Systems plc to its IT, information and cyber security related regulatory and contractual obligations, and any changes to those obligations or the wider threat environment
Providing legal advice on data protection matters and ensuring ongoing compliance with data protection requirements across the organisation
Ensuring legal risks associated with the storage and hosting of the information, intellectual property and data that the Company is responsible for are appropriately mitigated
Negotiating and drafting relevant contractual terms in a manner that documents an acceptable allocation of risk for the Company and, where applicable, supporting individuals in our commercial and procurement functions in negotiating and documenting those contractual terms
Promoting understanding and awareness of IT and data protection related legal risks across the Company’s businesses and functions
Delivering training for Data Protection Leads within business units and functions, and providing support and guidance to Data Protection Leads on complex matters
Monitoring changes to relevant legislation and Government contracting strategy, and where appropriate, engaging proactively on such changes where they present risk or opportunity for BAE Systems businesses
Your skills and qualifications:
Qualified solicitor or barrister
Excellent technical understanding of commercial contracts, with experience of IT contracting and outsourcing
Good knowledge of UK and European data protection law as it applies in the UK
Experienced in drafting, negotiating and advising on legal and contractual issues related to procurement and use of IT Systems and Services, including outsourcing, and cloud based SaaS, IaaS and PaaS offerings as both supplier and customer
Experience of advising commercial organisations on data protection compliance issues and advising international organisations on data protection issues on a cross jurisdictional basis

You should have strong interpersonal skills, particularly experience of working, and being able to communicate effectively, with stakeholders at a range of levels within the organisation. You must come across as confident and authoritative, with the ability to persuade others where necessary.
You will need to be pragmatic so as to devise sensible legal solutions to ensure compliance but which are consistent with effective business operation. You should also have excellent written skills, particularly the ability to translate complex concepts into readily understood messages.
