Brief Description

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for an experienced and motivated individual who will be able to be responsible for the engineering development of allocated proposals from clarification of remit to the completion of single option feasibility work and production of the detailed design ensuring that the engineering solutions to proposals are developed to best satisfy the business case.

About the role (External)

What does the day to day look like?

Day to day you will be ensuring the development remit for a proposal properly describes the engineering requirements, scope, possibilities and operational performance targets and maintain a robust challenge to sponsoring engineers and managers, in order to verify and value manage the business and technical remit and thereby optimise the business case. This will include making sure that the development activities result in schemes that are affordable and that meet programme requirements for time, cost and quality

You will also be involved with the development of engineering options for proposal taking into consideration safety, reliability, operational capacity modelling, maintainability, ease of construction, and environmental/whole life issues.Engineering excellence is to be supported by:

oEnsuring all relevant base data is available

oAssuring compliance with appropriate standards

oUsing risk ID and evaluation methods (e.g. HAZOP, QRA, LRM, and the GK/RT/14200 suite), as suitable, to evaluate and compare options

oUsing feedback from all relevant past projects across the UK rail network, lessons learned etc.

oRigorously ensuring designers are up to date via training, briefings, CPD etc.

During stages 2-5 you will be…

Acting / liaising with the Project ensuring that standards are being followed and options are aligned to them leading to you creating the copper / fibre cable design. As part of this post, physical surveys will be required to be carried out by you and will not be specific to one general location, hence travelling will be required.

Other duties can include but not limited to…

    Prepare the full engineering data package required for commencement of the detailed design, and participate in answering on-going clarifications/queries as needed

        Carry out independent checking of design documentation, where applicable

          Resource adequately the feasibility stages of project development, in both the quality and quantity of Network Rail and supplier staff, and in the use of the most appropriate support equipment

            Manage the engineering interfaces of allocated proposals with concurrent work in other disciplines, or within other programmes

            Key Accountabilities:

              Develop relationships with all departments, suppliers and handle customer's requirements in a timely and cost-effective manner.

                Deliver designs to the required SLA to contribute to the teams internal KPI's

                  Manage compliance to CDM requirements, such as identification and mitigation of hazards through design and driving safety by design

                    Manage complex design requirements, customer issues, whilst educating others to the adherence of Cable Designs within the organisation..

                      Undertake the role of Designer/CRE in accordance with NR/L2/INI/02009.

                      What essential skills and experiences are required?

                      To undertake this role, you will need to have the relevant Track Safety competencies of PTS & COSS.

                        An engineering degree or equivalent industry-recognised training qualification

                          IRSE Principles Designer licence or equivalent for the asset

                            A demonstrable aptitude for option development

                              Strong evaluation and decision-making skills

                                A working knowledge of rail engineering; relevant successful experience working in the principal discipline and an adequate understanding of all other related disciplines

                                  Design creation utilising CAD along with utilisation of the MS suite of applications

                                    An ability to work and communicate effectively in a team context

                                      An appreciation of all the life cycle stages of rail infrastructure

                                        Six Sigma Green Belt

                                        We would also like, but not essential.

                                          Membership of a relevant engineering professional institution

                                            Experience in design, installation and maintenance.

                                              Formal qualifications in risk identification and assessment
