3D Electromagnetic Modelling Engineer

Would you like to get involved in the stealth design and modelling of the surface warships to ensure that the risk of detection is minimised? We currently have a vacancy for a 3D Electromagnetic Modelling Engineer at our site in in Glasgow although we could consider other naval ships locations with travel required.

As a 3D Electromagnetic Modelling Engineer, you will be supporting the design and construction of the latest frigate for the UK Royal Navy and across international programmes for the Canadian and Australian Navies. You will work in a small design team providing engineering and modelling support to the Principal Engineer – Signatures in the management and control of the whole-ship signature performance; primarily Radar Cross Section (RCS) and Infrared (IR).

This truly niche role will provide you with a unique opportunity to influence design, working with cutting edge stealth technology on one of the biggest projects in the UK defence market right now. It is also an opportunity to join our growing Naval Ships engineering business in Glasgow, with excellent opportunities for progression within the team or wider business. We are also interested to hear from entry level graduates who may be keen to build upon their knowledge of electromagnetics.

Your main responsibilities as a 3D Electromagnetic Modelling Engineer will involve:

Manipulating 3D Hunter Class Frigate CAD model and interrogating the Bill of Materials to develop representations of the ship, as required for RCS and IR signature modelling

Running and analysing computer models to predict the RCS and IR signatures of HCF, using the In-house toolsets

Identifying aspects of the ship’s design that are degrading HCF signature performance

Liaising with system design teams to implement design modification that improve signature performance and compliance with ship signature requirements

Supporting the Principal Engineer in development of modelling techniques, as required to improve Infrared (IR) and Radar Cross Section (RCS) signature representation and modelling efficiency

Providing support to the Principal Engineer – Signatures in Quarterly Reviews, Project Design Reviews and other technical meetings and issues that arise

Undertaking engineering activities using project and company IT systems in accordance with the Engineering Framework to maintain HCF engineering design governance

Essential skills and qualifications

A Degree or equivalent qualification or experience in Applied Physics/Electromagnetics/Engineering

Experience of computer modelling techniques for engineering design assessment

Knowledge and understanding of mathematical or electromagnetic modelling

Desirable skills and qualifications:

Experience of working in multi-disciplinary engineering design teams

Knowledge of engineering design processes and engineering design lifecycle

A Research (PHD)/Consultancy/Military background

Location: Glasgow preferred but can consider Bristol or Portsmouth
