Project Manager

We are looking for a Project Manager to join our team in the North of England.

This is a full time (37.5 hours per week) position on a 13-month fixed term contract (maternity cover).

You can be based anywhere in the North and the salary for this position can be discussed at interview stage.

As the Project Manager you will continue the management and rollout of the Optibus project within First Bus, a Division of First Group

Optibus is a new scheduling system that is being implemented across all Operating Companies (OpCo's) in the Division and will replace the legacy systems that are currently in place

The incumbent will form part of the Technology Department and report directly to the IT Director but will have a dotted line to the Programme Director and Programme Office (PMO)

The role is to commence as soon as possible to allow for an adequate handover before the current PM goes on maternity leave in August 2020 so the ideal candidate should be available now or have a short notice period

Purpose of the role:

  • Overall responsibility for the ongoing management of the rollout of the Optibus project
  • Application of standard project management governance and alignment with the rest of the projects run within the PMO
  • Working closely with the Optibus Project Manager and Team to ensure a successfully rollout
  • Ensuring that the Optibus system meets the business requirements for current and future scheduling and network optimisation
  • Supporting and working with the First Bus Schedules Manager and the Optibus Team to ensure comprehensive testing, sign off and implementation of the system in each OpCo
  • Applying lessons learnt from one OpCo to the next to ensure ongoing improvement and efficiency
  • Management of risks and issues as well as change
  • Scheduling and chairing of all meetings and project boards

Main Duties

  • Execute scope and success criteria for constituent work streams with the project sponsors and governing boards
  • Manage project plans, associated governance, processes, procedures and tools to maximise delivery
  • Effectively manage the OpCo's and supplier through strong technical understanding and insight into implementation requirements
  • Engage and maintain strong links with stakeholders to provide feedback on plans, priorities and delivery
  • Ensure that the project is executed in accordance with specified budgets, schedules and performance criteria – with an emphasis on building efficiency and sustainable business change
  • Develop and maintain communications plans to share progress and change with stakeholders in division and operating company roles
  • Lead specific work streams and deliver practical activities required to maintain progress to plan
  • Complete all regular project documentation including presentations, monthly board reports, weekly project trackers, project plans, finance trackers and any additional documentation to support the delivery
  • Deliver regular progress reports to Project Board, Executive Sponsors and PMO, including and raising relevant risks and issues
  • Act as lead point of contact for all issues relating to the project
  • Working closely with other members of the PMO to ensure best practice sharing

Skills and Experience Required

  • Experience managing Information Technology/Software implementation projects
  • Experience as both a Project Manager and Business Analyst
  • Experience in the successful management of complex business change programs
  • Experience within the passenger transport sector and/or managing similar projects would be advantageous
  • Excellent project management skills with the ability to manage complex inter-dependent activities in a busy business-as-usual environment
  • Proven experience in delivering multiple strategic priorities in a fast-paced and rapidly evolving business
  • Experience of applying various project management methodologies and processes
  • Exceptional stakeholder engagement, both internally and externally, and the ability to overcome challenges and resistance to change and to achieve momentum despite competing priorities
  • A flexible approach to Project Management with the capability to identify and manage change, opportunities and risk
  • A very high standard of communication (verbal and written) and highly effective at influencing, negotiation and conflict management at all levels
  • Confident speaker with the ability to manage meetings and communicate with internal and external stakeholders at any level
  • Excellent attention to detail and analytical ability
  • Business report writing skills and preparation of presentations/board packs
  • Commercial and financial insight, awareness and experience
  • Preferably educated to a tertiary level and in possession of a Project Management qualification
  • Computer literate with competence in the full MS Office suite, including MS Project and Visio
  • Able to travel in support of project and business support requirements
