Principal Engineer - Software Assurance
Would you like to play a key role in the software assurance and safety aspects of the Astute platform systems? We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Engineer - Software Assurance at our site in Barrow-in-Furness.
As a Principal Engineer - Software Assurance, you will be working on a wide range of systems, ranging from video systems to large water chillers or steering and diving control systems.
This role will provide you with the opportunity to work on one of the most advanced and technologically complex attack submarines in the world. The Astute Whole Boat Engineering team is responsible for overseeing the development, acquisition, integration and assurance of all Astute ‘Platform Systems’ and their associated software that is housed on the boat to ensure these systems meet their functional, safety and mission requirements.
Your main responsibilities as a Principal Engineer - Software Assurance will involve:
Providing the Astute Design Authority with specialist advice for Software, including software safety justification
Ensuring Software requirements are adequately defined, agreed with the MoD and suppliers and flowed into the design baseline
Lead on verification activities through inspection and conducting audits on software outputs, harnessing software experience to foresee technical challenges through life and propose best approach
Assist Supply Chain by providing software engineering oversight in Supplier design reviews and acceptance events
Provide early warning to Astute Design Authority and Supply Chain on potential technical issues or software assurance shortfalls for Astute Platform systems
Attending suppliers meetings, safety working groups and meetings with the Independent Safety Assessor (ISA)
Assisting suppliers with responses to ISA to gain acceptance
Your skills and qualifications:
Hold a degree or equivalent qualification/experience in a STEM related discipline
Embedded software systems design experience
Application of software lifecycle and safety standards
Good technical authoring and documentation review skills
Experience and understanding of current Ministry of Defence and international software standards, and safety standards such as DefStan0056, DO-178C, IEC-61508 or ISO-12207
A Chartered Engineer or evidence of working towards chartership
Experience of ISO 9001, TickITplus and CMM (Capability Maturity Matrix)
Practice of using a software development plan, safety plan and software design documents
Design Review and software audit experience
