Technology Development Software Manager

Would you like to wor at the forefront of future technology development for the fleet of Royal Navy ships, in areas such as artificial intelligence and augmented reality? We currently have a vacancy for a Software Manager nominally based at our site in Broad Oak.

As a Technology Development Software Manager you will be responsible for managing the software teams by specifying the software work to be undertaken and balancing the work allocated to the core team with the available capacity.This involves working with technical leads and the Engineering Manager to plan work packages and responsibilities.You will also be responsible for recruitment and personal development of the core software team members.

This role requires software engineering expertise and experience of managing software development performed by a federated team from across the Combat Systems sites including Dorchester, Frimley, New Malden, Filton and Broad Oak.

Your main responsibilities as a Technology Development Software Manager will involve:

Working with the technical leads and engineering manager to deliver software work packages

Delivery of software engineering effort to budget and schedule including work package allocation & tracking

Supporting estimation of engineering activities for cost-to-complete exercises and when scoping/sizing additional work

Managing & motivating the software team including capability development & succession planning for team roles

Leading the development & execution of team resource plans including forward load forecasting & reassignment of engineers

Supporting the management & modification of product software engineering processes to ensure efficient & accurate execution of the software engineering programme

Your skills and qualifications:

Good understanding of the Software Development Lifecycle especially agile processes and methodology – 2-3 years’ experience as a minimum

Ideally experience as a scrum master

2-3 years’ experience managing and leading a small team and managing remote teams

Minimum 5 Years’ experience in engineering or a defence or related industry


Knowledge and experience of applying Combat System Equipment design processes and systems to Lifecycle Management guidelines

Experience within a Naval Combat Systems Development Environment across multiple lifecycle phases.
