Principal Engineer – Product Safety

Would you like to support and provide advice to the projects’ Technical Authorities including the generation of safety deliverables for both new and existing products? We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Engineer at our site in Glascoed.

As a Principal Engineer, you will beresponsible for ensuring that Munitions’ products comply with appropriate statutory, corporate and contractual safety requirements.You will carry out various activities to ensure that business and customer expectations are met in terms of achieving safety requirements against agreed milestones.

This role will provide you with the ability to develop a niche area within the organisation. This is a new role within Land UK so you will support with the development of product safety and be the subject matter expert for internal and external stakeholders.

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Engineer will involve:

Support and advise the delegated authorities in the Design Organisation, in matters relating to product safety for projects and bids.

Lead or support reviews with the stakeholder community as appropriate.

Conduct incident investigations. Contribute to the management of the Data Recording and Corrective Action System(s) and other record-keeping systems.

Chair Engineering Safety and Environmental Review Panels (ESERPs) and other product safety related reviews.

Build, maintain and foster a strong product safety culture across the business. Support the delivery of improvement plans in this arena.

Potentially supervise a team involved in the generation of specific product safety deliverables, including sub-contractors and/or consultants.

Once accredited as a suitably qualified and/or experienced person, the role may be required to hold the following responsibilities:

    Delegated Authority for Product Safety for the products in the IDT domain.

      Assessor and potentially Chair of Life Cycle Management (LCM) reviews.

        Approver in the Engineering Change Management process, for matters relating to product safety.

          Internal auditor.

          Your skills and qualifications:

          Essential:

          A degree or equivalent qualification within a relevant engineering discipline. Experience will also be a consideration.

          Knowledge and experience in:

            Applying a range of techniques in conducting Hazard Identification and Analysis and Risk Assessment.

              Producing robust and compelling ALARP and safety arguments.

                The production and management of Hazard Logs

                  An understanding of safety aspects and completion of assessments for compliance against various UK and other legislation.

                  A proven track record of producing technical engineering reports.

                  An ability to define and contribute to the development of product safety capability, including the creation of PS related engineering training material.

                  An ability to lead the implementation of product safety best practices, potentially as a trainer.

                  An awareness of Process Safety, Product Environmental and Product Security matters.

                  Desirable:

                  Knowledge and experience in:

                    Deriving and setting safety criteria and requirements using UK MOD defence standards, in particular Def Stan 00-056 and DSA 03.OME (formerly JSP 520).

                      Applying safety management processes within Systems Engineering Lifecycles, such as the CADMID cycle and the Systems ‘V’ model.

You will be analytical and have the ability to structure reasoned arguments whilst being methodical with good problem solving skills. Strong communication skills and stakeholders skills will support in your day to day activities and the ability to demonstrate sound and informed judgement.
