Internship Opportunities: User Experience/HCI Research

Job Type:Full Time

We have an exciting opportunity for a User Experience/HCI Research intern to work with us at Microsoft Research Cambridge. Our project is a partnership with a Microsoft product team, exploring frontline-centric business processes in real-world organisations. Frontline workers are critical for how organisations create value. They are at the centre of our largest industries, such as healthcare, retail and manufacturing; they include shop floor workers, production operators, sales associates, flight crew and many others. Focusing on how frontline workers create, consume and share knowledge at work, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team that explores how machine learning (ML) can be applied to support enterprise knowledge.

You will bring a human-centred perspective to the explorations, and work closely with ML experts, social scientists, designers, engineers and program managers. Using qualitative methods – including interviews and ethnographic methods - you will develop an understanding of frontline workers’ everyday experiences to inform the design of interactions between frontline workers and ML systems. Insights from this research will be used to inform ML-based solutions and experiences that transform how frontline workers create, consume and share knowledge at work.

  • Work in a multi-disciplinary team examining real-world organisations and workplaces
  • Work in partnership with both Microsoft Research and a Microsoft product group
  • Conduct mixed methods user research (e.g. ethnography, interviews etc)
  • Translate findings into practical design insights
  • Deploy prototype technologies and evaluate their impact on social practice
  • Generate insights that fuel ideation
  • Write and present your findings in technical documents or papers

  • Undertaking a PhD in HCI, CSCW or a related social science field (e.g. Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Organisational Psychology)
  • Experience or interest working in the Future of Work domain
  • Experience of planning, conducting, analysing and writing-up ethnographic research
  • Experience of participant recruitment and ethical review board
