Brief Description

The main aim of this role is to provide Engineering Technician input to Geotechnical, Civil Engineering and Buildings schemes. This will also include site works such as surveying and supervision of Contractors, report writing and draughting using a full range of 2D & 3D Autodesk software and support our transition into BIM.

About the role

Network Rail Design Delivery (NRDD) within Infrastructure Projects (IP) will provide a managed service for design delivery through a regionally-structured, multi-disciplinary organisation and relationships with supply chain design organisations. The NRDD bring a range of different specialisations including Signalling, E&P, B&C and Track Design that complement each other to improve the overall diverse service offering.

As part of our internal expansion we are looking for Engineering Technicians to work within our emerging Digital Engineering (BIM) and civil engineering teams with a background in railways, infrastructure and/or multidisciplinary projects.

Do you have ….

  • experience of 2D & 3D software modelling capability either using Autodesk or Bentley products
  • a minimum of a HNC/HND/degree relative to discipline
  • experience in working in a team environment

Key accountabilities for the role

To prepare CAD and 3D models to develop concept, feasibility and design proposals to meet business objectives. This may involve site visits in order to provide effective viable proposals.

To provide cost effective, fit for purpose and value for money technical design service to internal and external clients and in accordance with efficiency targets.

To establish, maintain and improve cost effective 'corporate' design standards for new build and renewals works having due regard to the particular requirements of company standards and policies and heritage designations where these apply.

Production of written and verbal instructions using the computer software packages within AutoCAD.

Production of exploratory hole-location plans and geological sections from ground investigation data.

To proactively participate as a member of a Civil Engineering design team.

To assist the Senior Technician Civils and engineering technicians in order to secure smooth and successful consents and approvals.

To review third-party technical design proposals for works to Network Rail's assets.

Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications for the role


  • Excellent design and presentational skills, including use of CAD (Autodesk/Microsoft products)
  • Experienced in working in a team environment
  • Construction Design Management (CDM) Awareness


To have or be working towards a relevant Civil/Structural Engineering qualification

Membership of a professional body such as the Institution of Civil Engineers

Broad knowledge of the railways and railway engineering

Experienced in use of 3D modelling, revit, 3DS max, Civils 3D

Network Rail adheres to a structured pay framework, any salary offered will be within the following pay range:

Salary starting from £22,000 per annum
