Safety and Environmental Engineer

You will have the opportunity to work with other technical specialists and may manage a team of engineers to help us design, develop, integrate, manage and support complex systems and combat sub-systems for in‑service and future submarines. Your levels of responsibility will depend on your skills and experience, but you will be able to apply your subject matter expertise to ensure and be able to demonstrate that the safety and environmental risks of operating our submarine combat systems and other complex sub‑systems have been identified and are as low as reasonably practicable.

Your levels of responsibility will depend on your skills and experience, but you will be able to understand and report the programme status for activities in your area of responsibility, identify problem areas and implement recovery plans, helping us to support our submarines that play a critical role in our nation's defence.

Your main responsibilities as a Safety & Environmental Engineer will involve:

Providing advice on safety and environmental matter to the project and engineering managers delivering our programmes and ensuring the issues and risks are correctly considered, and appropriate mitigations implemented. This will include engaging with third parties, such as equipment or system suppliers, to review and gather supporting evidence.

Developing the necessary studies and assessments, such as Environmental Cases and Management Plans and Statements. Support Product Environmental audits as necessary and review and update Environment Hazard Logs

Using your expertise and experience to make recommendations for improvements where appropriate, at the same time assessing the implications of changes to legislative standards and making recommendations to ensure evidence of compliance is maintained.

Your skills and qualifications:

Essential:

Degree level qualification (or equivalent experience) in relevant Environmental or STEM subject (Engineering/ Physics/ Maths/ Science).

Broad knowledge of industry safety and environment standards

Demonstrable experience in safety and environmental engineering activities in the defence, maritime or a relevant highly-controlled domain.

Desirable:

Good communication skills and ability to interact and manage stakeholders

Complex Systems and Support:

Complex Systems and Support (CS&S) is part of BAE Systems Submarines. We predominantly supply to the UK MoD but with smaller derivative work done in support of international Customers. Our team is responsible for system design, build and/or procurement of the major electronic and mechanical systems on a submarine, as well as provision of test, integration and support services.
