Contribute towards growing the Microsoft business in the UK by developing and implementing an effective government affairs strategy, contributing to initiatives that shape the direction the company takes and delivers our long-term plan for the business in the UK.
Leverage Microsoft’s business assets and strengths to promote the reputation of Microsoft with political audiences and those who influence them. Protect Microsoft from a regulatory environment which would hamper us growing our business in the UK.
Working with colleagues in the UK, US and internationally to develop Microsoft’s policy position on core issues of concern including artificial intelligence, digital skills, cybersecurity, privacy and data protection standards, lawful access to data, intellectual property, public sector delivery and online safety in Westminster, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Brussels.
Following relevant policy and legislative initiatives on the above topics and leading Microsoft’s outreach to communicate the company’s views on proposed policy and legislation in consultation processes.
Leveraging the government affairs function to support the company’s public sector sales team in their engagement with government departments.
Directing initiatives to leverage Microsoft’s philanthropies and corporate responsibility activities to build a positive reputation with decision-makers and influencers.
Supporting the Microsoft Ltd senior leadership team in preparing for meetings with politicians and influencers including cabinet ministers, MPs, MSPs, AMs and Government officials.
Leading the company’s engagement with trade associations and think tanks such as the CBI and techUK.
Organising creative and effective events to complement Microsoft business and policy priorities, including a party political conference programme.
Managing policy queries from internal sources and external audiences.
Implementing an effective contact programme with policy decision-makers and influencers.
Representing the Government Affairs function at internal meetings within the Corporate Affairs team and with other Microsoft Corporate, External and Legal Affairs colleagues worldwide.
Key Success Criteria
Ability to quickly understand Microsoft’s key policy areas, including technical policy.
Willingness to take responsibility for specific areas of Government Affairs activity and work with a high degree of autonomy to deliver tangible results.
Quickly develop a clear understanding of how Government Affairs fits into the broader business and build impactful working relationships with colleagues in both the UK and global Corporate Affairs teams, the UK communications team and the broader UK business.
Language skills helpful but not required.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
1) Essential Experience
You should have eight to ten years of experience of UK politics or policy development either from having worked for a UK political institution and/or in government affairs in a business, trade association or consultancy. A demonstrable insight into the policy and regulatory challenges faced by technology businesses operating in the UK would be an advantage.
Through direct experience you should have a first-rate understanding of how the UK Government and the EU institutions work as well as a genuine interest in and passion for politics.
You should have experience of using your government affairs skills to support companies in the public procurement process. Ideally this should be in IT but it could be in defence, outsourced services etc.
2) Technical / Functional Skills
A knowledge of technology policy issues is a strong advantage.
An understanding of Microsoft technologies would be helpful but a passion for technology and what it can do for society is essential.
An established network within the UK Parliament and Government departments and an understanding of how to grow it is essential
