About the department

System Operator is the body responsible for the planning, creation and allocation of capacity to run trains on the GB rail network to deliver economic growth.

The Capacity Planning Data Management function leads on developing a sustainable support structure that emphases on Data.We coincide with the rail industry, its users, funders and partners to shape tomorrow's railway to meet the ever-growing needs of the passenger.We can articulate the requirements and future needs of our customers so that we can provide a precise, robust proposition to integrate into the long-term strategic vision of the network and its usage.

About the team

Every day we produce a daily timetable to safely operate 20,000 trains; delivering over 4.5 million passengers; travelling over 900,000 track miles; to pass over 1.5 million signals on green; to arrive at 220,000 station stops and to arrive at the advertised minute. It's an incredible feat!

As the team tasked with establishing the timetable, Capacity Planning is committed to finding ways to increase reliability for passengers and freight end users.

Programmes and Capacity Planning Data Management lead the design and delivery of Capacity Planning's improvement programmes to deliver better timetables.

Brief Description

Who are we looking for?

We are recruiting a Senior Technical Operations Developer to help us unlock the potential of Capacity Planning.

We are looking for an individual who can design, develop and maintain customisations and extensions to supported in-house applications to help improve the quality and timely production of the timetable.

If you have IT development experience with complex projects; experience with Excel, VBA, .Net and SQL; can work to tight deadlines and have excellent communication skills to engage with customers we would love you to apply

Job Purpose

To design, develop and maintain customisations and extensions to supported in-house applications that enable enhancements and efficiencies in the quality and timely production of the timetable.

About the role

Key Accountabilities

    Design, develop and deliver in-house applications to enable planning teams to efficiently and effectively deliver high quality timetables.

      Provide technical and subject matter expertise to internal and external customers and stakeholders to improve the accuracy and completeness of timetable planning data to deliver high performing timetables.

        Review and give technical guidance on the impact of technical upgrades and patches on in-house applications and associated code, providing viable solutions to enable smooth transition to BAU for the planning and data communities.

          Create supporting documentation for all new and existing tactical tools within Capacity Planning to provide robust processes and in line with Network Rail standards.

            Manage issues and identify resolutions with any in-house application as required in a timely fashion to minimise the impact of application outage and subsequent delivery of timetables

              Manage the common code library and develop code to establish best practice and create a centre of excellence for coding within Capacity Planning, relating to the production of in-house applications to support Capacity Planning systems

                Manage stakeholder communication with the planning community specialists and working groups to manage the requirements for future tactical planning enhancements

                  Lead the development on computer programming and coding requirements for the team to deliver required outcomes and allocate correct resources to deliver desired outcomes

                  Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications

                  Essential

                    Degree, or equivalent, in an information management or business-related discipline

                      Substantial knowledge of coding languages (e.g. VBA, SQL, Vb.net, JAVA)

                        Knowledge of identifying technical solutions from problem statements

                          Experience in developing and delivering technical solutions to meet customer requirements

                            Ability to manage activities with short timescales while still following established change control processes

                              Demonstrated communication skills; verbal, written and presentation.

                              Desirable

                                Knowledge of the railway planning industry

                                  Knowledge of specific timetable planning software (TPS, ATTUNE, RAILSYS)

                                    Understanding of project lifecycles

                                      Ability to prioritise and manage time effectively
