Would you like to play a key role within the Estimating team within our Maritime Services business, working on a variety of high profile bids and campaigns that will offer longevity and career progression? We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Estimator at our site in Portsmouth.

As a Principal Estimator, you will effectively deploy and adapt the BAE Systems Estimating and Pricing processes to suit the business requirements. You will be influential, providing leadership and direction in defining, delivering, reviewing and challenging bid and project solutions and inputs. You will work across all business streams in the Maritime Services P&TS business including Underwater Weapons, Training, Radar, Manufacturing and Information Systems & Services Management, both for the UK MoD customer and on export opportunities.

As Principal Estimator you will take ownership of the estimates and pricing solutions you develop including being responsible for the timeliness, accuracy, alignment with the solution, competitive analysis and success of delivery of the pricing to the customer. You will undertake the compilation of highly complex cost estimates, and other detailed costing information in support of costing, pricing and tendering activities. You will use analytical techniques to check and challenge functional estimates, as well as other costing and pricing information, to ensure the solutions developed are robust, value for money and competitive.


Your main responsibilities as a Principal Estimator will involve:

Leading the Estimating and Pricing support to Bids, Campaigns or Projects teams, including the compilation of final costing and pricing information, whilst playing a key role in the team

Influencing key stakeholders and contributing to the overall business winning process

Creating typically highly complex costing and pricing for bids in line with business and estimating processes

Reviewing all inputs and ensuring these are in line with the scope of work and are value for money

Challenging functional estimate inputs as appropriate and ensuring relevant business areas are bought into their relevant part of the estimate

Your skills and qualifications:

Essential skills

Has good knowledge or work experience of Estimating or a similar analytical role in a senior position


Usually has, or is working towards, a degree in Engineering, Business or Mathematics, or has extensive experience working in a Manufacturing or Engineering organisation


Has good and broad professional knowledge and experience of Estimating and Pricing principles, techniques and practices and understands how Estimating roles fit into the organisation as a whole


Good mathematical and statistical skill


Good I.T. Skills, in particular Microsoft Excel, Project and PowerPoint

Desirable skills

Is developing a good understanding of all relevant regulatory requirements. (Such as the single Source Contracting Regulations)


Has a good practical understanding of Bid Management tools and processes, including the Life Cycle Management Framework
