The move to the cloud calls for rethinking how systems are built and run. The unprecedented scale of the cloud together with the demand for extremely high availability pose many challenges. It also creates an opportunity to build systems stacks afresh without the burden of legacy. Our work spans distributed systems, storage, operating systems, networking, verification, hardware offload, and other areas of systems. We do research on storage and networking stacks for the next-generation optical infrastructure, data stores co-designed with custom hardware accelerators, verification tools that improve reliability of cloud-scale networks, and distributed systems designed from scratch to exploit characteristics of modern hardware. We design and build systems that can be deployed at cloud scale and work with product teams to contribute to Microsoft’s services.
