Principal Engineer (Site & Facilities)

Would you like to further your engineering career at our prestigious submarine facility in Barrow-in-Furness? We currently have several engineering opportunities in support of an emerging new department responsible for the Barrow site facilities, plant equipment and associated infrastructure.

As a Principal Engineer, you will be part of the Site & Facilities department, who are responsible for a range of site equipment, facilities and infrastructure to support the build of submarines for the Royal Navy. The role will involve managing present and future assets, ensuring the correct maintenance activities have been put in place, considering the impact of asset failure and having project oversight.

This role will offer good exposure to a variety of challenging projects across the site and interaction with a wide range of stakeholders. You will have the chance to work with a very broad range of site assets and facilities, such as: buildings, manufacturing machinery, forming and welding equipment, control systems, airfield assets, accommodation buildings, and more.

You will have the opportunity to further your engineering career, working on high value, complex programmes, alongside future promotion opportunities in technical leadership or engineering/project management.

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Engineer (Site & Facilities) will involve:

Leading a couple of engineering staff members; ensuring each team member is assessed, developed, deployed and skilled to maximise their personal contribution and to meet the requirements of contracts, schedules and specifications

Ensuring developed solutions are clearly defined, integrated, configured, controlled and delivered, including resolution of conflicts and integration issues that occur through development and delivery phases

Identifying resource requirements through the lifecycle of the project and managing engineering resource within agreed limits

Performing appropriate engineering planning, management and review activities to ensure products are integrated, safe, fully compliant and delivered within agreed requirements for cost, quality, time and schedule

Assuring the maturity of the developed solutions is appropriate for the specific requirement and that all technical risks and opportunities are captured

Interfacing and influencing internal and external customers and other stakeholders such that product offerings meet requirements and specifications

Your skills and qualifications:

Essential:

Degree level qualified (in a relevant Engineering or Science discipline) or working towards Chartership with relevant experience

Experience working with asset management or large-scale site/facilities projects

Experience within one of the following engineering domains: Civil, Electrical/ Instruments or Mechanical Engineering

IT Skills including MS Project, Word, Excel

Desirable:

Lean manufacturing skills or similar continuous improvement skills

Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century.

The Astute class will equip the Royal Navy with its largest and most capable generation of attack submarines. We are responsible for the design, build, test and commissioning of these state-of-the-art vessels. In total, seven boats will make up the fleet, each weighing a mighty 7,400 tonnes.
