Role summary

Based at our Cannon Place office and reporting into the Director of Campaigns, the Senior Policy Adviser/Principal Policy Adviser will be responsible for shaping the CBI’s views on the UK corporate governance regime, including stewardship, assurance through audit, stakeholder engagement and executive pay, helping to lead liaison with key stakeholders such as BEIS and the FRC, and running the CBI’s Companies Committee.

Key responsibilities

Support the creation and delivery of the CBI’s policy work on corporate governance:

  • Deliver and develop the CBI’s corporate governance work plan for 2019 focusing on four key areas; creating an effective regulator and UK framework; improving the quality of company audit; enhancing stewardship in the UK; and helping all companies to deliver high quality reporting
  • Own CBI member engagement on corporate governance issues, including identifying key member input for ongoing and future government consultations
  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality briefings for the Director-General and Chief UK Policy Director on corporate governance issues for meetings with political stakeholders and CBI members
  • Work alongside colleagues in campaigns and press to maximise the impact of the CBI’s corporate governance work with key stakeholders in the government, the opposition, and media.

Manage the relationship with key stakeholders and partners:

  • Act as the key working level contact between the CBI and civil servants at BEIS and HMT, and with regulators FRC/ARGA and the CMA
  • Represent the CBI at key external working groups, including the FRC’s stakeholder advisory panel, and at events with third parties such as GC100 group and the TUC
  • Utilise key stakeholders through the CBI’s Companies Committee to help scrutinise and inform the CBI’s work on corporate governance.

Support the CBI’s member recruitment and retention strategy by delivering an effective package of corporate governance support for members:

  • Develop a strong member proposition on corporate governance, working collaboratively with colleagues from the commercial side of the business
  • Distilling the CBI’s political and practical insight on corporate governance into accessible content for members
  • Providing members with best practice examples on how to respond to recent reforms in corporate governance including executive pay, stakeholder engagement and reporting by large private companies.

Effectively run the CBI’s Companies Committee to help inform and guide the CBI’s policy work on corporate governance

  • Proactively utilise Companies Committee as the primary vehicle for informing and testing the CBI’s policy work on corporate governance
  • Identify and agree topics for discussion and objectives for meetings with the Director of Campaigns and Chief UK Policy Director, produce content for the meetings, and ensure the timely delivery of high-quality briefings for the Chair and members of the Committee
  • Increase the membership of Companies Committee to ensure it reflects a greater range of company types and interests, and that it contributes to the CBI’s objectives on diversity and inclusion.

Knowledge and experience

What an individual must know or understand to be able to fulfil the role’s requirements.

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Background working in policy formulation and delivery
  • Understanding of the key trends emerging in corporate governance
  • Understanding of the government’s priorities related to corporate governance
  • Understanding of the policy development process and broad knowledge of the CBI’s policy priorities
  • Knowledge of a range of modern campaigning & lobbying tools & techniques.

  • Campaign strategy and management – including developing objectives, planning approaches to delivery, and coordinating projects and messaging
  • Project management – including planning, implementation (including risk management), closure and evaluation

  • Customer focus – including managing relationships with key members and other stakeholders to maintain member satisfaction and the CBI’s reputation
  • High personal efficiency/productivity, flexible collaboration and team-working – including ability to work flexibly on multiple projects and tasks in parallel and manage competing (and fluid) priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced, pressured environment. Willingness to support colleagues and contribute to wider CBI activities.
